Investors search for profitable market opportunities with a technology business that is based on a product and service that helps solve real customer problems.
Many ideas and technologies may exist, but most may not meet the full range of investment criteria from angel and venture capital investors. Investors hardly know any great opportunity.
One example of an exceptional investment was the Ontario-based Research in Motion (RIM). Research in Motion completely changed the way customers received email while away from their offices, meeting a need that had not yet been met by any other device or technology. Research in Motion developed a business model that used wireless service providers as their distribution channel; This has led to a rapid expansion of their customer base, a significant increase in revenue, and of course, profitability.
There are many examples of excellent technologies that do not solve the problem and needs of the customer. And so do not succeed as a business opportunity.
Your business needs more than just great technology to grow. Customers need to be willing to spend money to solve their problems and prioritize getting the solution. For example, if you have a better idea, but you don't want customers to spend money to buy your product because of tough economic times, your idea remains just this: an idea, not a business.
