Description
As Aristidis Iliopoulos, one of the scientific leaders of the project, Professor of Biology & Genetics and Director of the Biology Laboratory at the School of Medicine of the EKPA, emphasizes to APE-MPE, pneumonia is the first cause of death from infectious causes worldwide. One of the major complications of severe pneumonia is lung infections from opportunistic pathogens, such as fungi. These secondary infections occur frequently in hospitalized patients with severe influenza and COVID-19 pneumonia, as well as in immunocompromised hematological patients, but the mechanisms responsible for their establishment in the lung remain unknown.
